The commercial was pulled from YouTube, however you can watch the original video here. It's astounding that an advertisement like this actually reached the public, like no one at Duncan Hines stopped to think what it could mean to people. Hip Hop Cupcakes definitely serves as a reminder to always consider how different audiences will perceive your work.
Ha, I saw this on Huffington Post the other day along with the video, showing the cupcakes as they get frosted while beatboxing. She stops pouring frosting before the last one and he clearly has less beatboxing skills until he is covered as well.
ReplyDeleteI loved it though! I didn't think it was racist, it sounded more like electronica to me anyway. I kinda loved the ending, it was an amazingly annoying commercial. Still, surprising to see something like this made when everyone is sensitive to pretty much anything.
ReplyDeleteI think this is so funny/ridiculous. The commercial is so cute! I don't really get the racism to it either. I would barely call them hip hip cupcakes, they are definitely more electronica- I agree with Toni. Surely there is more than one flavor of the sauces. Would there be such an outcry if they used caramel or strawberry? I loved the ending too. I think they just wanted him in on the party. I'm thinking of adding this commercial to my 'great' list in protest :) Definitely a good lesson in paying attention to different audiences, though I honestly don't know if I would have caught this myself.
